Unions

Freelancer Unions represent broad factions that various Lancers belong to. They’re not so much companies in the traditional corporate sense, but more like additional codes of conduct layered upon the Freelancer’s Code. When you hire a Freelancer from a specific Union, there’s an expectation of what kind of Freelancer you’re going to get.

Unions also cut down on the perceived risk of Freelancer collusion, a serious concern for some syndicrats. Two Lancers from the same Union won’t take counter-ops against each other, but Lancers from different Unions often have such diametrically opposed points of view that they have no hesitation on the battlefield. Usually there’s at least a modicum of professionalism in accordance with the Code, but some rivalries, like the one between Troubleshooters United and Interdiction Sector, are so deep that encounters might turn deadly.

When a client needs to hire multiple Freelancers for an op, they usually hire them all from the same Union if possible. If the same Lancers from the same Union often find themselves working together on ops, they sometimes form into proper Crews.

These 5 Unions are not the only Freelancer Unions in the world, but they’re the largest and most influential, and the ones the world’s most famous (and infamous) Lancers belong to.

Troubleshooters United

Specializes In: Negotiation, Asset Protection, Exfiltration/Rescue, Warranted Arrest, Sales, Entertainment

Refuses: Assassination, Kidnapping, Smuggling/Trafficking, Cyber-Intrusion, Infiltration/Larceny, Sabotage, Acts of Terror

Known Members: Superia, Takedown, Cavaleiro

Troubleshooters United are renowned for their scruples. Purporting to be the most ethical of Freelancers, members of this union live and die by their shining reputations for only taking legal, morally clean jobs. It is one of the easiest unions to find oneself kicked out of for transgressing, and one of the strictest with regards to conduct.

They turn down a lot of work, but their reputation also means they are chosen first when a job absolutely needs a trustworthy Lancer beyond reproach.

Resolution Specialists Alliance

Specializes In: Negotiation, Asset Protection, Exfiltration/Rescue, Warranted Arrest, Sales, Entertainment

Refuses: Kidnapping, some forms of Smuggling/Trafficking, Acts of Terror

Known Members: Walking Shadow, Galatea, Carter Burgess

The RSA operates in similar circles to Troubleshooters United, but with far fewer restrictions on the kind of jobs they won’t do. They still prefer to operate on the right side of the law and the clean side of ethics, but they also understand the need for moral greytones and that sometimes, a Lancer just needs to get paid. Nonetheless, they still have limits and lines they don’t cross.

Global Freelancer Confederation

Specializes In: Asset Protection, Assassination, Cyber-Intrusion, Infiltration/Larceny, Warranted Arrest, Entertainment

Refuses: Acts of Terror, Sapient Trafficking

Known Members: Bastet, Platinum, the Night Shift

The GFC is the largest Freelancer union by membership, and has the broadest spectrum of specializations and stances on various ethical issues. If it grows any larger, it is likely to splinter into smaller Unions for practicality’s sake.

Force Works

Specializes In: Assassination, Kidnapping, Smuggling/Trafficking, Cyber-Intrusion, Infiltration/Larceny, Sabotage

Refuses: Acts of Terror

Known Members: Orb-Weaver, Rezak, Termina

Force Works are ruthless Freelancers with almost no limits. They will get the job done, no matter what the job is. They have a reputation for cold-hearted professionalism.

Interdiction Sector

Specializes In: Acts of Terror, Assassination, Kidnapping, Smuggling/Trafficking, Cyber-Intrusion, Infiltration/Larceny, Sabotage

Refuses: Negotiation, Sales, Entertainment

Known Members: Ahirman, Frenzy, Warg

Interdiction Sector are the worst of the worst. They are little more than barely legal terrorists and psychopaths that society allows to roam free. Despised by other Lancers, members of the Sector are known for being bloodthirsty, extreme, and completely without mercy. A syndicrat doesn’t knowingly hire a Lancer from Interdiction Sector unless they intend for things to go horrifically.
